- Identify needs of local military families as well as existing sources of support.
- Improve access to services and other support for our veterans and their families.
- Expand support networks and services for military families.
VET 2 VET COALITION
Vet 2 Vet operated in conjunction with the Orange County Mental Health Association. I was fortunate enough to attend their press conference and opening just six months ago. There were Senators, NYS Assembly members, mayors, other veteran organizations in attendance showing there support of Vet 2 Vet and expressing the major importance of this new program. The primary goal of Vet 2 Vet is to bring veterans together that are suffering from PTSD to help and guide them through peer to peer mentoring. The veterans are able to meet one another and make connections and try to assist and help each other through discussing there situations in past and present experiences. There website is www.Vet2VetOCNY.com and there is a 24 hour helpline 1-800-832-1200. They conduct meetings in three cities Middletown, Newburgh, and Port Jervis.
Heroic Food is a new farmer training program with a special mission: to prepare military veterans for careers in sustainable farming. Based on an 18 acre former sheep and horse farm just outside of Hudson, NY, the program provides a strong foundation in sustainable farming and farm business management; on-farm housing and mentorship; paid training positions on local farms; and a veteran-supportive environment.
Over 40% of military veterans come from rural agricultural backgrounds. A farmer-veteran recently told me, “When I enlisted, I was prepared to do whatever it took to get off the farm. But when I got out of the service, I was ready to do whatever it took to get back to the farm.” Like a lot of veterans, he was looking for a way to rebuild his life, provide for his family, serve his community, and regain a sense of purpose, a mission worthy of his skills and dedication.
By partnering with local farms and food businesses, Heroic Food is able to offer training and experience in a wide range of farm and food production skills, from raising crops and livestock to bee-keeping, cheese-making, pickling, tractor repair, etc. And by partnering with local veterans services providers, the program is able to be responsive to veterans’ needs and connect them with local services when needed.
Heroic Food emphasizes health, stewardship, and sustainability. Studies confirm what veterans tell us: that caring for the land promotes health and healing in people who have suffered trauma. For veterans with PTSD, farming is uniquely restorative, and a pathway to reintegration into civilian life. There website is www.heroicfood.org
